Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds cover The Pogues’ ‘Rainy Night In Soho’ in Malahide Castle
The gig marked their first return to Ireland since their two-show run in the 3Arena in 2024.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds broke out a rendition of The Pogues’ ‘A Rainy Night in Soho’ in tribute to Shane McGowan and Trevor Dietz as they kicked off their European tour in Malahide Castle last night.
Trevor Dietz, who was the manager of Fontaines DC died on Sunday.
The gig marked their first return to Ireland since their two-show run in the 3Arena in 2024.
The performance featured a 24-song tracklist comprising a mix of hit fan favourites and rarely-played deep cuts.
The band opened with ‘Get Ready For Love’, ‘From Her To Eternity’ and ‘Wild God’, before mixing things up with ‘Train Long-Suffering ’, the first time the band played the track live since 1989.
They played other rarities including 'Hiding All Away / White Elephant’ (First time since 2013), ‘Stranger Than Kindness’ (First time since 2015) and 'Nobody’s Baby Now’ (First time since 2017), before closing the set with ‘A Rainy Night in Soho’.
Their history with the track runs deep. A duet between Nick Cave and Shane McGowan was released as a B-side to 'What a Wonderful World' in 1992 and featured on Cave's B-Sides and Rarities album in 2005.
Nick Cave performed the song in 1997 at the Liss Ard Festival in Skibbereen, which ran between 1997 and 1999.
Cave even performed ‘A Rainy Night In Soho’ at McGowan’s funeral, and hailed him as “the greatest songwriter of his generation”.
