New radio documentary on use of technology in hits by Sinéad O'Connor, Enya and more to air on 2FM
The new 2FM documentary explores women's use of technology in music from the 1980's onwards.
A new radio documentary on the use of technology in hits by female artists will air on 2FM.
Control is a four-part radio documentary series produced by Kate Butler and narrated by Renn Miano, airing during the New Music Show with Beta Da Silva on RTÉ 2FM from Monday, June 15, to Thursday, June 18.
It reflects on how more women were using technology to make hit records in the 1980s, and investigates whether fewer women have producing credits on modern music and why that may be the case.
Episodes one to three follow the work of Irish music powerhouses and artists with Irish heritage who were producing music during that period, focusing on Mariah Carey, Kate Bush, Enya and Sinéad O'Connor.
Episode four continues with co-writers Kate Butler and Renn Miano challenging the suggestion that music technology is exclusive to men, and examines the "damaging impact" that idea may have.
Control also details the work activists and allies have put in to try give women equal opportunity in the recording studio.
The series features a range of contributors with experience from the music industry, including studio engineer and producer Gloria Kaba, who has worked on music by Beyoncé and Jay-Z, and professor and author Dr Rebekah Farrugia.
