Moby makes music free for non-profit use
The Play star has added 150 tracks to a music database, freely available for use by filmmakers and students.
His breakthrough album Play may have been famous for having every one of its 18 tracks licensed for commercial use at least once, but Moby is now looking to lend a helping hand to his fellow artists.
The electronic icon started work on a website, [link]mobygratis.com[/link], in 2008 and it is now boasts a database of 150 of his songs (including 50 unreleased tracks). Whilst more famous tracks from the likes of Play do not feature (he's got to make a living somehow), classic Moby cuts like 'Shot In The Back Of The Head' can be found.
They are available, completely free of charge, for use in non-profit projects. Intended, in his own words, "for independent and non-profit filmmakers, film students and anyone in need of free music for their independent, non-profit film, video or short."
Royalties payments will be required if the project is to be commercial, with the royalties going to the Humane Society.
The website allows you to stream the database and request downloads, as well as view projects that have made use of the music before. Very altruistic indeed.
