Meghan Trainor - Title
More about that bass from American pop princess
Meghan Trainor exploded onto the pop scene over the summer with the annoyingly catchy ‘All About That Bass’. And guess what? Her debut album Title provides a lot more in the same vein.
‘Dear Future Husband’ is a doo-wop pop tune with slick harmonies and a finger-clicking beat. As pop filler goes it’s serviceable stuff – but it’s sure to add to the whirl of controversy already surrounding Ms. Trainor as she describes ‘the perfect wife’. “I’ll buy you groceries,” she promises, “anything you need.”
Elsewhere, ‘3AM’ is a High School Musical-esque number portraying the teenage angst of a drunk texting a non-reciprocting lover. A collaboration with John Legend on ‘Like I’m Gonna Lose’ offers a welcome change of pace: a surprisingly soulful number, it is also one of the few songs that doesn’t posit Trainor as God’s gift to the male species. On ‘Bang Dem Sticks’, meanwhile, Trainor channels her inner Cher Lloyd: it’s a catchy hip-hop sounding ode to drummers, and a definite album highlight.
While her vocal performances can’t really be faulted, and the production is state of the art, the album quickly runs out of steam. What starts as a fun and upbeat collection soon becomes repetitive.
