Lou Reed’s final words on how music touches his soul.
“Sound is more than just noise, and ordered sound is music. My life is music" Reed told filmmaker Farida Khelfa on September 21, a month before his death.
In this extraordinary and thought-provoking interview, Reed says that from sound that of your blood running, to your mother’s heartbeat from the womb, we spend our existence immersed in rhythm. We are all, he implies, made of music.
The interview took place as part of a photo shoot for Parrot, a company whose Parrot Zik headphones Reed helped develop.
“I know the way I like things to sound” he says, “I wouldn't want to hear Beethoven without beautiful bass, the cellos, the tuba. It’s very important. Hip-hop has thunderous bass. And so does Beethoven. If you don’t have bass, it’s like being amputated. It’s like you have no legs.”
Eager to take advantage of the new technology, Reed had just remastered all of his albums. He admitted that the beauty of the clear sound moved him to tears.
