Live Report: Wet Leg shake up Dublin's 3Olympia
The Isle of Wight quintet blew their fans away with a loud, powerful performance.
English indie-rock band Wet Leg made a name for themselves in no time thanks to their artistic creativity and punchy sound. After winning three Grammys and two Brit Awards, they released their new album moisturizer in July. The album was followed by an extensive global tour, whose UK and Ireland leg brought them to 3Olympia.
The night kicks off with support from Faux Real, a French-American art-pop duo made up of brothers Elliott and Virgile Arndt. The two are dressed in all white, sporting crop tops, skirts and split-toe shoes. From the moment they appear, their energy is intoxicating. Whether they’re doing acrobatics, swinging around portable lights, or jumping into the front-row stalls to dance with the crowd, they're fully committed. Both are drenched in sweat after the first song. Their music leans pop, but with sharp electronic and experimental elements that ensure that they've just gained a venue full of new fans.

They're led by a biceps-flexing Rhian Teasdale, singer and guitarist of the band, whose weapon of choice is a stunning, green see-through 1999 B.C Rich Mockingbird. She’s joined by guitarist Hester Chambers, guitarist–keyboardist Josh Mobaraki, Ellis Durand on bass, and drummer Henry Holmes.
From the jump, the band’s energy is incredible. They look genuinely enamoured with what they’ve created, performing every song with wide grins, dancing and jumping across the stage, fuelled by their own sound. Each member’s talent shines throughout the night thanks to various solo instrumentations.
They open with 'catch these fists', the lead single from their newest album. It’s a high energy punk track about wanting to beat up people who refuse to respect one's personal space on a night out.
Many of their tracks touch on topics of the modern life and the frustrations that come with it, making it very easy to connect with them.

Its infectious riffs, heavy bass lines and humorous lyrics, mocking an ex’s behaviour after a breakup, make for an electric moment.
Wet Leg's music is made to be played live, every song hitting far punchier than on record and the brutal strobe lights feel like an assault on the senses, in the most cathartic way possible.
They have a real talent for creating memorable moments. At one point, they invite a nameless tambourine player on stage to join in. During 'CPR', Teasdale twirls around the stage with a bright red rotary phone, calling emergency services to declare that she needs medical attention, because she’s in hopelessly in love.
'11:21' is a standout. It begins in darkness, with Teasdale slumped on the floor as soft synth chords float through the venue. When the slow drums enter, smoke-filled bubbles drift toward the audience. After a dozen fast, high energy tracks, the song gives the electrified crowd a moment to breathe. Its gentle, melancholic tone and lyrics about heartbreak and letting go only deepen the heavy atmosphere.

It's the song that started it all for Wet Leg. It begins off with minimal instrumentation and a dead-pan vocal performance before erupting into a pop-punk anthem with soaring guitar riffs during the chorus. No wonder it won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance.
The night ends on a cathartic high with 'mangetout', another fan favourite off moisturizer. It feels like a victory lap after an amazing show. It's fast paced melodies giving fans one last chance to dance to their hearts content.
