Live Report: Biig Piig returns to an enthusiastic Electric Picnic
White noise and some ambient effects fill the Electric Arena in the buildup to Biig Piig’s return to the stage.
It’s been six years since her last appearance at the festival. The buildup feels all the more important as a result, with a palpable excitement to be felt around the arena.
Powerful organ-sounding chords suddenly cut through the white noise, as the latecomers hurry closer. As she gracefully bounds onstage, the crowd give her a deserved welcome.
Launching into ‘4AM’ anyone unfamiliar with the artist would immediately be faced with her incredible vocal ability- her powerfully dulcet voice reverberates around the arena at last.
As if these vocals weren’t enough to capture the crowd, she also gracefully bounds, twirls and dances her away back and forth, never missing a beat.
The setup onstage is a simple one- she’s backed by two others, a drummer and a bass player (who also doubles and triples as a saxophone and keyboard player).
The range of her discography would in theory be challenging to recreate live, but you’d never guess it from this performance. Slow, swaying atmospheric songs are immediately followed by high temp drum and bass bops- the crowd just about manage to keep up.

Running to the barrier to sign a fan’s shirt, there’s a genuine sense that she is delighted to see them- like she’s greeting old friends.
This feeling is made all the more apparent when she jumps into the crowd, singing with them and encouraging them to dance with her.
As she pauses to make a speech in solidarity with Palestine, her sincerity comes to the surface yet again as she chokes up and has to pause for a second. Encouraged by the crowd. She continues, speaking powerfully about recent atrocities committed.
“When they try to silence us we must be louder,” she says to a roar of support.
Moving to her next track, (still moving constantly), she brings out a special guest, singer Emily Doyle, as the two perform an energetic duet, displaying their chemistry through their vocal collaborations.
Their collaboration leads her to speak about supporting women- whether it’s the right to choose, supporting women of colour, or protecting trans women she highlights the importance of solidarity- she then dedicates her song ‘Favourite Girl’ to the women in the audience.
From start to finish, Biig Piig delivers a wide range of tunes, all of them successful hits with a crowd delighted to see her back.
