Almost unique among female performers (Madonna doesn’t count because she’s a genius), Kylie has retained not only a ‘cor not ‘arf’ popularity with the boys’ brigade but has also established star-status with credible glossy publications ranging from The Face to GQ.

Let’s be honest, it has little to do with the music. Whatever her secret may be, she has seemingly effortlessly established herself as an icon of symbolic status, like Diana Dors, (who couldn’t act), Barbara Cartland, (who couldn’t write), and Vivenne Westwood, (oh c’mon!).

Incredibly, this is her seventh album, and judging by the list of contributors, including Robbie Williams, Guy Chambers and Steve Anderson, she’s still hip.

The strange thing is that this isn’t bad. You’ve already heard the catchy ‘Spinning Around’, but there are a couple of other treasures here, including the rather gorgeous ‘Bittersweet Goodbye’ and the Euro-bop anthem ‘Butterfly’, coming soon to a gay dancefloor near you.

Also it’s funny, “Will you take me poolside, To taste the summer breeze, There’s a place that looks inviting, By the frangiapani trees...”

All in all it’s a polished offering that promises an epic live outing if she’s so inclined. I’ll be right at the front.
