The acclaimed historical novel, set against the backdrop of politics and society in Ireland in 1916, is the chosen book for the centenary of the rising in Dublin and Belfast…
Lia Mills’ historical novel Fallen has been announced as the Dublin: One City One Book choice for 2016.
And in a new development, for the first time, in 2016, Dublin will team up with Belfast for a 'Two Cities One Book' Festival. 2016 will see a partnership between Dublin City Libraries and Libraries NI (the library authority for Northern Ireland) – so that in April 2016, readers in Dublin and Belfast will engage with the same book at the same time.
A programme of events in both cities will provide opportunities to engage with the book in a range of contexts. The full programme, organised by Dublin City Public Libraries and Libraries NI (the library authority for Northern Ireland) will be announced in March 2016.
Fallen was originally published in 2014. Through the experiences of its central character Katie Crilly, the novel explores the challenges of day to day living in a conflict situation, alongside contextual subjects such as education and votes for women. It vividly depicts the various – and conflicting – allegiances faced by Irish soldiers in the First World War and those supporting the cause of the rebellion.
Lia Mills is an Irish writer. Her first novel Another Alice was published in 1996. She has published two other major works: the novel Nothing Simple (2005) and the memoir In Your Face (2007)
2016 will be the 11th year of the One City One Book Festival. Fallen is published by Penguin Ireland.
