Lauryn Hill explains why she's never released another album
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is the American singer's only solo studio album.
Lauryn Hill has explained why she's never released another album after 1998's The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
The singer, rapper, and songwriter hasn't released a sophomore album since her critically acclaimed debut.
Hill's answer came from a response to a New York City-based media outlet, FRAIM World, focused on socially conscious hip-hop.
FRAIM World posted on their Instagram a list of potential reasons why she hasn't released a follow-up project. Giving reasons such as creative ownership battles and exhaustion that comes from newfound fame.
In the comment section, she wrote, "I disagree", before following up with a lengthy explanation.
"When you're inspired and desire to be principled, what doesn't get talked about enough is the drain...nor the challenge to find safety so that you can create with integrity," she said.
"The Score nor The Miseducation were made because we were 'allowed' to represent what we did, we fought for every inch. Wild success can cause greed that begins to degenerate the art for the money. We're people living through all this".
Hill also wrote about the need for more nuance when it comes to discussions around artists and the phases they go through. Calling herself a "Harriet Tubman" figure, saying she was "running to speak the difficult truth to power before certain forces tried to close those doors".
"If it was so easy to do, where is that expression now on the world stage?" she added.
"Systems fear what they can't control. Creativity is most potent when it's free. If I did nothing else, I introduced standards and possibilities to a generation that didn't know they could operate on that level before then".
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was recorded after Hill's band, the Fugees went on hiatus.
Almost entirely written and produced by Hill, it's a concept album about educating oneself about love, with lyrical themes following relationship complexities, motherhood, and faith.
The album was nominated for a myriad of industry awards, winning most of its nominations.
At the 1998 Billboard Music Awards, it won R&B Album of the Year. Hill's 10 nominations at the 41st Grammy Awards marked the most Grammy Award nominations in a single ceremony for a woman. Winning 5 awards, Hill became the female artist with the most wins in a single ceremony.
In 2017, American producer and professor 9th Wonder selected the album for the first batch of hip-hop albums to be preserved in Harvard University's Loeb Music Library.
The album has also been collected by the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), while the Recording Academy inducted it into the 2024 class of the Grammy Hall of Fame.
