Spotify offers premium users first access to new albums
Universal Music Group and Spotify have agreed on two-week exclusivity for premium Spotify users which means UMG artists can decide if their song is premium-only for a period of two weeks on release.
The deal has been confirmed in a press release by Daniel Ek, CEO of Spotify: "Starting today, Universal artists can choose to release new albums on premium only for two weeks, offering subscribers an earlier chance to explore the complete creative work, while the singles are available across Spotify for all our listeners to enjoy.”
The deal is a compromise between Spotify and some UMC artists who want their songs premium-only. Spotify however, insists they won’t allow premium-only content so it seems to be a reasonable solution.
