Hurray For The Riff Raff
A new alt. folk star is born
Delving into the Cajun and mariachi side of American folk music (as opposed to the more countrified side), Hurray For The Riff Raff sees the vocals of Alynda Lee Segara fill up just enough space texturally and mix-wise to let all the banjos, guitars, pianos, accordions and fiddles know who’s boss. She’s got an unusually authorative alto voice that glissandos like a bowed string with just a touch of rasp and just a hint of remembered anguish. And it doesn’t sound like she’s singing for fame or cool or kudos, it sounds like she’s singing to kill time between life experiences (that’s a good thing). Intriguing.
