HUDSON MOHAWKE
At 15, Hudson Mohawke was the UK's youngest ever DMC turntablist. Now aged 24, the shy Glaswegian has, in three short years, attended the Toronto Red Bull Music Academy, been signed to legendary UK label Warp - who released his debut album Butter in October 2009 - and toured the world, before ending up squarely back in the fold at the Red Bull Music Academy Stage at this year's Oxegen.
"The Academy is a really good experience if you've never done anything like it before," he says. "A lot of people who go are used to just working solo in their bedrooms at home. I hadn't really done a lot of collaborative work before, so being thrown into a recording studio with a whole load of other people is quite a healthy thing." He's done his bit for the Academy this year. "They always keep in touch with past participants, so I was involved with this year's studio team," he adds. "I'm not a teacher but the role is to talk to people, give a bit of guidance, and gently make sure the sessions have a focus."
