Hot Press Track of the Day: Pursued by Dogs ‘Talk’
‘Talk’ was the first single from their debut LP, Pursued by Dogs, released April 2018.
Pursued By Dogs are a four-piece from Dublin made up of Andrew Brennan, Dave Sheehan, Ronan Marr and Suzanne Purcell. Their self-entitled album was produced by James Darkin.
The synth-heavy ‘Talk’ opens the album. The song begins with Suzanne Purcell’s piercing vocals, and comes to a euphoric end when Andrew Brennan’s voice join hers in a harmonious duet.
After Suzanne Purcell joined the band on keys and vocals, the band, formerly known as Dogs, became Pursued by Dogs. Once Purcell joined, Brennan admitted that “the songs resonate more…The use of piano has brought a richer sound, more musicality, and there’s an injection of tenderness. With Suzanne, there’s a split between male and female voices. In the songs there are now two different perspectives, rather than the listener being battered by my squawking all the time. Pursued By Dogs used to be full-on testosterone. Not anymore.”
When it comes to song-writing, the band are passionate about being as truthful as possible. They told RTE 2 FM: “If I don’t like it, I don’t like it, and it doesn’t come out. I think the honesty of writing for yourself and not compromising, then at least there’s integrity there… and that definitely comes across.”
The band describe their sound as “dark pop” and “happy/sad.” They have cited bands such as Radiohead and electronic artists Christian Löffler and Stimming x Lambert as key influencers on their music.
