2Pac's family file wrongful death lawsuit
The lawsuit aims to uncover the identity of the individuals who were involved in the murder.
2Pac's family have filed a wrongful death lawsuit, seeking compensation for the artist's murder in 1996.
The suit names former gang leader Duane "Keefe D" Davis, who is set to go to trial in August for his alleged role in the shooting, along with additional unnamed co-conspirators.
Davis is the only person ever charged in connection with Tupac Shakur's death. Police alleged he and his nephew planned the shooting and were in the car from which the shots were fired. In court, prosecutor Marc DiaGiacomo described Davis as the "on-ground, on-site commander" who "ordered the death" of the rapper.
Despite the charges, he pleaded not guilty in 2023. The three men who were in the car with him at the time of the shooting, including his nephew, have all since died.
The new lawsuit aims to uncover the identity of the "individuals who were involved," alleging there was a "complex conspiracy" behind the murder.
The wrongful death case, separate to that trial, was filed on Tuesday, April 28, by Tupac's brother Maurice Shakur, representing the estate of his late father (and Tupac's stepfather), Mutulu Shakur.
"Nearly 30 years after Tupac's death, in 2023, the first - and only - arrest was made," said Maurice in the document.
The report expresses hope that new evidence will finally allow the family to identify the "individuals who may have participated in planning, financing, directing, or carrying out the conspiracy" to murder the rapper.
The new sources of information in the case include grand jury transcripts from Davis' criminal proceedings and interviews from the Netflix documentary Sean Combs: The Reckoning.
The documentary, released last November, features police interview footage in which Davis claims that Combs ('P. Diddy') offered him $1m (€853,000) to murder Tupac. The former rapper repeatedly denied involvement in the shooting and called the documentary "a shameful hit piece".
