Holy Ghost
Eighties revivalists come up short
This week, in an attempt to get on board with the ‘80s revival, I dressed as a retro riot policeman and went around beating the shit out of anyone who looked like a miner. I love Michael Jackson-style synthesised basslines and one-finger synth-lines as much as the next bicycle-shorts-and-giant-spectacle-wearing ass-clown, but much of the pop music of this decade was only relevant as the cultural wing of Thatcherism. It’s the sound of privatisation, nihilistic consumerism and class-warfare from the top. No amount of irony or self-awareness is going to remove those associations for me. And Holy Ghost can’t hold a candle to The Human League or Giorgio Moroder or any of the better acts they’re apparently trying to ape.
