Grounds for Invasion - Dying Stars
Galway electropop duo make twinkling debut
Will O’Connor and Tracy Friel make up talented duo Grounds For Invasion. Having released their self-titled EP last year they are back with their debut long-player – an atmospheric collection of edgy tracks layered with kaleidoscope synths, marching drum beats and hazy vocals.
Opening with the aptly titled ‘Beginning’, we are drawn into a pulsing, hypnotic rhythm as Friel’s delicate, harmonic vocals echo along the romantic sentiment – “I am lost in the idea of you.”
‘Let Go’ is a dark, enticing number with an edgy atmosphere, chronicling the demise of a relationship in deft lyrics: “Stop fucking around, you know what I need/ Just make it hurt so I know that it’s real.”
‘Nagelbett’ conjures a throbbing, electronic soundscape, while the ’80s disco-esque ‘Bruce Lee’ feels like the score to the most psychedelic of daydreams.
A sonically expansive album, Dying Stars is an excellent debut record, one that etches itself into your mind and keeps you hovering over the repeat button: 2015’s sure to be a big year for these Galway natives.
