Go Plastic
Squarepusher is an alias for a one man electronic army that answers to the name Tom Jenkinson, arguably the most fabulous breakbeat terrorist in the world today and most certainly the strangest.
Squarepusher is an alias for a one man electronic army that answers to the name Tom Jenkinson, arguably the most fabulous breakbeat terrorist in the world today and most certainly the strangest. The already familiar ‘My Red Hot Car’ is one of the finest, funniest and freshest singles of this or any other year. Jenkinson ingeniously annihilates two-step garage and deconstructs just about every drum ‘n’ bass cliché in the book to produce the best piece of deranged mayhem since Aphex Twin’s classic P-funk pisstake ‘Windowlicker’.
It is precisely this sense of surprise and wholesome humour that prevents Squarepusher from descending to the anal depths of some of his more suspect label mates on Warp. ‘Go Plastic’ is a masterpiece of percussion informed by his previous career as a bassist and drummer. Therefore, Jenkinson isn’t stuck in the same regressively one-dimensional electronic rut of his purist peers. It’s as if this hyperactive one man band is laying down the gauntlet to other trainspotters and shouting; “Come and have a go if you think you’re bonkers enough!”
If ‘Come To Daddy’ is your idea of a pop single, falling in love with this is pretty much a dead cert. If not, you’d be advised to stay well back unless you want your brains to be well and truly melted. Which is just the way Mr. Squarepusher likes it.
