Glen Hansard: Michael D. Higgins, Rachel Zegler, David Keenan and more pay tribute

Tributes are pouring in this morning, following the devastating news of Glen Hansard's death, aged 56.

The world-renowned Dublin singer-songwriter – who won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2008, alongside his Once co-star Markéta Irglová – died following a road traffic accident in the early hours of this morning, July 29.

Former President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins is among those who have paid tribute to Irish music legend this morning – describing him as "a wonderful musician and performer, a troubadour whose gift for storytelling brought so much joy to audiences across the world."

"Throughout his career, Glen made a particularly noteworthy effort to keep alive the work of all those who had gone before him, keeping alive the songs of previous generations of Irish musicians and singers who had influenced him, as well as the songs of departed friends such as Mic Christopher and Fergus O'Farrell," his statement continues.

"Glen also placed great emphasis throughout his life to the importance of talking the problems of society, including regular work in drawing attention to the problem of homelessness. This work drove his annual Christmas Eve busk, which raised money for those suffering from homelessness and related causes at Christmas."

Michael D. Higgins goes on to recall being "in neighbouring dressing rooms for the Hot Press anniversary concert in the 3Arena in February, where the Frames delighted the audience with a typically engaging performance."

Award-winning American actress and singer Rachel Zegler – who starred in Steven Spielberg's remake of West Side Story – took to Instagram this morning to share a series of photos with the Dublin musician, captioning the post: "oh i will love you forever. rest now, my friend."

Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O'Donovan, has also released a statement in response to the sad news – noting that "few artists made as big an impact on modern Irish storytelling as Glen Hansard."

"From his early days busking on the streets of Dublin, through The Commitments, to founding rock outfit The Frames, Hansard consistently poured passion and vulnerability into every note," he adds. "His impact will last generations in Irish music, even as his life has ended far too soon."

Taking to social media, David Keenan recalled the first time he met Glen in 2015 – when the Dublin singer-songwriter called him onstage at the Spirit Store in Dundalk.

"I genuinely couldn’t believe the gesture, at a time when I felt like giving up that encounter lit the fire in me again," David wrote this morning. "Afterwards he brought me to America, gifted me the battered guitar I’ve written every song on since 2018 and he sat and recorded the Strip Me Bare EP beside me.

"No one did more to pull others up onto the ship and give them a shot. Rest easy Glen. Thank you for everything brother."

The National Concert Hall have also recalled several special occasions with Glen over the years – from headline shows to Shane MacGowan's 60th birthday concert – describing him as "a cherished presence" on the venue's stage.

"An artist of extraordinary talent, integrity and compassion, Glen used his music to shine a line on social injustice, celebrate our shared humanity and foster a sense of community," the National Concert Hall's statement reads. "His work consistently reflected a deep belief in the power of art to inspire empathy, connection and positive change.

"Glen’s remarkable contribution to music and culture, both in Ireland and internationally, leaves an enduring legacy. He will be remembered not only for his extraordinary artistry but also for his generosity of spirit and unwavering commitment to using his voice for the greater good."

Actor Robert Arkins, who starred Jimmy Rabbitte in The Commitments – which also featured Glen as Outspan – has remembered him as "a genius musician and songwriter, wonderful actor, deeply committed campaigner and a loyal and fierce friend."
