Fitzcarraldo
1993: Glen Hansard discovered Herzog’s Fitzcarraldo. The image of Klaus Kinski dragging a boat up a mountain while blasting Verdi at the natives struck a chord with the singer, who felt that getting The Frames back off the ground was an equally daunting task. He focused all of the fury and frustration of the previous year into writing probably The Frames’ single greatest song. This, plus other new tunes like ‘An Angel At My Table’, ‘Red Chord’ and ‘Revelate’, a hit single, form the spine of the band’s second album proper. The rest, as they say, is history.
No 37 in 2009, as voted for by over 200 Irish musicians. Up from No 66 in 2004.
