Ex-Turnstile guitarist Brady Ebert claims he hit singer's father with a car in self-defence
"I'm sorry, but this is pure self-defence. I was straight-up attacked," said Brady Ebert.
Turnstile's ex-guitarist Brady Ebert has claimed he hit the band's singer Brendan Yates' father with his car in self-defence.
"I'm sorry, but this is pure self-defence. I was straight-up attacked," said Ebert to a district court commissioner, insisting that the surveillance camera footage would prove his innocence.
However, Montgomery County district court judge Sherri D. Kock has described the alleged attack as violent and targeted.
Last week, the Montgomery County Police arrested Ebert on first-degree assault and second-degree attempted murder charges for running over Brendan Yates' 79-year-old father, William Yates, with a car. As per the county's arrest records, Ebert is being held without bond.
According to the Baltimore Banner, on March 29, the police found William outside his home with a broken bone protruding from his leg.
His family said that the former Turnstile guitarist drove up to the house, honked, and swore, then drove off before returning.
According to the police, William threw a rock at Ebert's Buick LeSabre, who then drove into the singer's father as he attempted to run away. Ebert then allegedly returned to the house to tell William that he "deserved it".
"Turnstile cut ties with Brady Ebert in 2022 in response to a consistent pattern of harmful behaviour affecting himself, the band and the community," Turnstile said in a statement released last week after Ebert's arrest.
"This past week, that violence led to a physical attack when Brady went to the house of Brendan's parents and used his vehicle to run over Brendan's father, causing severe physical trauma. We are grateful that Mr Yates survived, has successfully undergone surgery, and we're hoping for the best possible outcome in his recovery. We have no language left for Brady."
Formed in 2010, Ebert was one of the founding members of Turnstile and a childhood best friend of frontman and lead singer Brendan Yates.
Last year, he formed a band called Self-Evident Truth (S.E.T), but was ejected from the group after posting allegations about Turnstile's finances and claiming that its members had taken a restraining order against him.
"Brady is no longer a member of The S.E.T.," said the band. "We will not stand by his ridiculous comments and behaviour toward the members of our band and our community."
Baltimore-based, Grammy award-winning band Turnstile will be performing their first show since Ebert's arrest this Friday, April 10, at the Coachella festival.
