Special performance takes place next month...
October 11 marks the anniversary of the death of iconic French singer Édith Piaf. In honour of the occasion, The Sugar Club will host a night dedicated to Piaf's memory on Thursday October 10.
Entitled No Regrets, the evening will see Irish singer and French chansons specialist Jeannette Byrne perform many of the well known and not so well known songs of Piaf. It also features music from other composers who were discovered or owed much of their success or start in the music world to her.
“I feel I was born knowing it”, says Byrne. "From an early age I was exposed to all sorts of music; classical, jazz, pop... I loved it all. But what really influenced me was seeing Mirreille Mattheu on Sunday Night at the London Palladium.
"I was gripped and went around singing the songs, mouthing the French words not knowing what I was singing. I then discovered Édith Piaf through a French friend who came to stay; she was named Édith after the famous singer."
