Donald Glover says he "always promised Ireland" he's "going to be there" while revealing cause for 2024 show cancellations
Glover was due to play the 3Arena on December 5 last year.
Donald Glover (Childish Gambino) has revealed a stroke caused him to cancel his 2024 Childish Gambino tour, which featured an Irish date.
Glover said that he became ill while on tour last year, suffering severe head pain and vision issues. After attending hospital in Houston, doctors revealed that he had a stroke, further tests revealed there was a hole in his heart that required two surgeries to repair.
The musician noted the first thing he thought about after suffering the stroke was "letting everybody down".
"I always promised Ireland I’m going to be there, and I still haven’t been," Glover said at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival in Los Angeles.
Glover's New World tour kicked off in August 2024 and was expected to run well into 2025, spanning North America, Europe, and Australia. A December show in Dublin had also been on the schedule. But after 18 performances, Glover cut the tour short, initially telling fans only that he was dealing with a medical issue and needed to undergo surgery and take time off to recover.
Although the tour had been promoted as his final outing under the 'Childish Gambino' moniker, tied to his album Bando Stone & The New World, Glover suggested that the health scare had shifted his perspective. He said performing still brings him "deep joy" and quoted his wife, “If this life is the flavour, then when I'm done, give me another scoop.”
