Demi Lovato to join cast of Eurovision movie

Demi Lovato celebrated her 27th birthday yesterday and actor Will Ferrell helped her reign in the day by welcoming Lovato to the cast of his upcoming movie, Eurovision.

“We want to make a very special announcement about a brand new cast member and it just happens to be her birthday today!” Ferrell said in a video posted to Netflix’s comedy account, Netflix Is A Joke. The video then cuts to a boomerang of Demi Lovato blowing out the candles in what seems to be her movie dressing room.

“y’all, Will Ferrell made me a cake...from scratch,” the singer wrote on Instagram. “It looks completely professional and store bought so I’m not at all suspicious that he baked it himself in all of his free time 😝”

The movie, Eurovision, is based on the international singing contest that brought the likes of ABBA and Céline Dion to fame.

Written by Will Ferrell and Andrew Steele, Eurovision will be directed by David Dobkin, from Wedding Crashers and The Judge.

The film will follow aspiring musicians Lars Erickssong (Will Ferrell) and Sigrit Ericksdottir (Rachel McAdams) in their quest for musical fame as they are given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform for their native Iceland in the competition. It was recently announced that Pierce Brosnan would join the cast to play Erick Erickssong, Lars’s father aka the most handsome man in Iceland.

Lovato will reportedly by playing Katiana, who is "one of the best and most angelic singers in all of Iceland".

Lovato has roots in acting, starting on Barney and Friends with Selena Gomez as a young child and then rising to fame on the Disney Channel, but is most known nowadays for her ability to belt out pop anthems.

She hasn’t released an album since 2017, but her latest single, ‘Sober’ was released last year. In it, she admitted that she had relapsed after six years of sobriety. About a month after the release of the single, Lovato suffered from an overdose and spent over a week in the hospital recovering. She then went to rehab for further treatment.

"What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something that I must continue to overcome and have not done yet," she said in a now-deleted post after being released from the hospital.

In 2010, the singer was treated for mental illnesses including bipolar disorder, bulimia, and cocaine and Oxycontin addictions, according to Hot Press. She was initially treated and spent a year living in a sober facility.

Her role in Eurovision marks her return to acting after her last year's relapse.
