Cut Copy - Free Your Mind
Superb effort from Australian electro-rockers
I first came across Australian dance-rock outfit Cut Copy at Oxegen at Oxegen 2006, having randomly wandered into the tent in which they were playing. The band struck up a series of infectious grooves, delighting the crowd, and I was hugely impressed.
The good news is that Cut Copy’s fourth album, Free Your Mind, may actually be their finest to date, with the group finessing their distinctive brand of funky electro to near perfection. The opener (and title-track) is absolutely magnificent, a psych-tinged dance number with strong DFA influences, particularly LCD Soundsystem and Factory Floor. There are similarly blissful grooves to be found on the euphoric house number ‘We Are Explorers’, the irresistible electro workout ‘Let Me Show You Love’ and the pulsating rave-up ‘Foosteps’, which has shades of The Orb. Brimming with imagination and vitality, these are tunes destined to go down a storm in a live setting.
Careful to vary the pace, Cut Copy also get their chillwave groove on to winning effect on the wonderful ‘Dark Corners And Mountain Tops’. Overall, Free Your Mind is something of a triumph and again highlights Cut Copy’s status as one of music’s best kept secrets.
Key Track: 'Free Your Mind'
