Crowdfunder campaign launched for mural honouring Mani in Manchester
You can donate to the crowdfunder campaign below.
A crowdfunder campaign has been launched to create a large-scale mural of Gary "Mani" Mounfield in Failsworth, Manchester.
Inspired by Ian Brown's eulogy to Mani, non-profit GRIT Studios stepped forward to organise a community-led, crowdfunded project that celebrates Mani's life, music and spirit.
Mani's brother, Greg Mounfield, is supporting the campaign, facilitating a prominent, large wall space for the mural and choosing the design.
The mural will be painted by Pic.One.Art, who recently portrayed Noel and Liam Gallagher outside Sifters Records in Burnage, Manchester.
Elsewhere, the campaign is raising funds for Maggie's Manchester, a cancer charity that was close to Mani and his wife's hearts during her cancer treatment, and for which they fundraised.
The petition's goal is £10,000, currently standing at over £6,000. You can donate to the crowdfund campaign here.
Mani was a key figure of the Madchester rock scene, joining The Stone Roses in 1987. Nine years later, the group disbanded, and Mani became the full-time bassist for Primal Scream.
In 2011, he left Primal Scream to join The Stone Roses for their reunion.
Until his official retirement from music in 2021, Mani remained active in the music scene through his DJ sets.
He often spoke about his Irish roots, namely his connection to Kildare, as his mother was from Maganey near Athy, County Kildare. In 2018, he received a Made of Athy plaque.
Mani passed away on November 20 last year, aged 63.
