Critics' Choice 2006
The top five albums from 2006 by the Hotpress critics.
1. Bob Dylan Modern Times [Columbia]
Self-produced under the non de plume Jack Frost, Dylan’s biggest selling record in decades, and the third part of a trilogy that began with Time Out Of Mind, was a masterfully wry and assured reworking of old blues, folk, country and old-timey forms, utilising fragments of apocryphal lyrics and migrated melodies. The result was a body of songs that sounded as old as the Civil War and as fresh as tomorrow morning.
2. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Show Your Bones [Polydor]
3. Bruce Springsteen – We Shall Overcome [columbia]
4. Arctic Monkeys – Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not [Domino]
5. Thom Yorke – The Eraser [XL]
