Country music legend Toby Keith dies at 62
After years of battling stomach cancer, Toby Keith dies at age 62.
Toby Keith, one of Nashville’s biggest stars with country hits “Who’s Your Daddy?” and “Made in America” died on Monday. He was 62.
The announcement of Keith’s death was published on his website yesterday, saying he “fought his fight with grace and dignity.” Following his 2022 diagnosis of stomach cancer, Keith underwent two years of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, passing “peacefully” surrounded by family.
The Oklahoma native spent the first 30 years of his life working in oil fields and playing as a semi-pro American football player before finding his start in the music industry.
Keith went on to cultivate his larger-than-life persona over a decades-long career, with his 1993 debut single “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” instantly becoming a number one hit.
Ranging stylistically from traditional twang to pop-country ballads and Southern rock, Keith released over 60 charting singles, with 20 No. 1 hits including “I Wanna Talk About Me” and “Beer for My Horses.”
Armed with clever word play, cowboy swagger and boisterous patriotism, Keith has been invited to perform for several US presidents, such as George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump, who awarded him a National Medal of the Arts in 2021.
