Cicada win UCD Battle of the Bands 2025
A Fender guitar worth €1,400 was up for grabs as a number of bands battled it out on the Freshers Week stage in UCD.
Dublin-based indie rockers Cicada emerged as the winners of this year's UCD Freshers week Battle of the Bands, hosted by the UCD Music Society in association with Hot Press.
One of four promising young acts to perform on the day, they impressed judges with their formidable stage presence, well-written original material and overall excellent musicianship. Each member took their turn to sing a song, and their sweet-sounding harmonies underlined their bright talents as individuals and chemistry as a unit.
Their sound meanwhile, veered between folk, pop and classic rock, reminiscent of the likes of Big Thief and Fleetwood Mac. An act to keep an ear on.
That's not to say it was an easy decision. Openers Precinct offered some electrifying indie grooves to kick off the show, while Indian twin duo Adil & Aman, known as Twinztagram, showcased some mind-boggling beatboxing and fast-paced rapping chops. Closer Noelle Carroll and her band were similarly stellar, offering a collection of confessional, headbanging rock songs, and a couple of crowd-favourite covers to boot.
There could only be one winner though, with Cicada taking home the grand prize - a coveted Fender J Mascis signature Telecaster, courtesy of X Music.
