Cicada - On Our Radar Q&A: "The feelings we get based on these experiences really write the songs"
Fresh off their Battle Of The Bands win, Cicada discuss their BIMM origins and upcoming concept EP, set for a Spring 2026 release
Where did you guys meet and develop your sound?
Harvey: Most of us met while studying at BIMM, but I’d wanted to start a songwriting group for a while – a place for people who just love songwriting, rather than focusing on a genre.
You won the Battle of The Bands this past September. How did it feel to perform alongside other Irish bands in a competitive format?
Chris: In many ways, it was an opportunity for Irish artists to support one another. It sucks that you have to compete against each other, but we wanted the best for everyone. It was nice to see some familiar faces and connect with new artists as well. In terms of the win, we didn’t go in expecting anything, it just felt great to put on a good show!
What do you feel makes you guys stand out in the current Dublin scene?
Chiara: We bring a bit of soul to it, you know? We see a lot of great bands perform, but you can tell the dynamics are off. You can see a major difference between people just doing their sets, and people who really put their heart and soul into the music.
What themes do you focus on in your songwriting?
Harvey: We focus on real people and real stories. The feelings we get based on these experiences are what really write the songs.
What’s up next for you guys? Any new music in the works?
Harvey: We’re currently working on a concept EP, focusing on the narrative of a maternal character. Love is highlighted in that way through the connection between mother and child, focusing on the disconnect of the relationship.
• Cicada play a Satellite Sessions gig at the Sound House, Dublin on December 10.
