Camilla Kerslake
First album from Gary Barlow protege
This album is an odd concoction indeed. There are covers of such hoary staples as ‘She Moves Through the Fair’, ‘Pie Jesu’ and ‘Panis Angelicus’, for goodness sake! Kerslake is a decent vocalist but brings absolutely nothing new to the table on these. In fact, the only hints of individuality come when she moves outside her comfort zone and starts to take real risks.
Her Italian language cover of Take That’s ‘Rule the World’ carries the song to new places, and she brings an attractive vulnerability to the Elvis hit ‘I Can’t Help Falling In Love’. ‘How Can I Keep From Singing’ should score big on radio, and her take on Mike Batt’s hit for Katie Melua, ‘Closest Thing to Crazy’, will prompt comparisons with Katherine Jenkins, as will the delicate ‘Rain’.
