A stellar panel line-up will join author Paul Howard to discuss the Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album, which was released 50 years ago "today", as part of the Mountains to Sea dlr Book Festival at 8.30pm on 23 March at The Pavilion in Dun Laoghaire.
Paul Howard, who is probably best known as the creator of the cult character, Ross O'Carroll-Kelly, has become something of an expert on this seminal classic album since researching his highly acclaimed biography 'I Read The News Today Oh Boy', which is about Guinness heir Tara Browne, who was immortalised in the Beatles song 'A Day in The Life'.
He will be joined by a panel that includes our very own Roisin Dwyer, Commisioning Editor at Hot Press. Over her years at HP, she has interviewed a stellar line-up of musical luminaries.
Other panelists include David Brophy, who is the leading Irish conductor of his generation and the principal Conductor of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and Lisa Lambe, a singer and actress who is currently releasing her second album with members of Hothouse Flowers.
The event's moderator will be Tom Dunne, who presents the Tom Dunne Show on Newstalk and was lead singer and main songwriter in '90s band Something Happens.
The event is being billed as "the story of the greatest rock album of all time". Voted No 1 in Rolling Stone's Top 500 Albums of All Time, the pre-eminence of Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band goes largely unchallenged. The album was released on June 1, 1967, and served as a confirmation that, after years of manic touring, The Beatles remained at the forefront of pop music innovation.
While we now all know that 'A Day in the Life' was inspired by the death of Tara Browne, the subject of Paul Howard’s bestselling book but did you know that the song was banned by the BBC? Or that no Beatle played an instrument on 'She’s Leaving Home?'
Fifty years on, the album continues to amaze and enchant. So, what exactly are the secrets of its undying charm? You will find out much more about this great album at the event.
