Build Me A Swan
A Debut Full Of Mystique From London-Based Dubs
In Hindu and Buddhist traditions, chakras are energy centres located in different points of the human body, from which all human energy flows. Whether you accept this part-physical part-mystical take on the way in which the human body works, it is relevant to considering these Dublin indie newcomers. For starters, Build Me A Swan is an ambitious record (it features four nude models carrying swans before them on the cover), it is breezy and full of hazy hooks. But does it ever hit you right in the solar plexus? Perhaps that isn’t what the band are about...
Still there is a lot of verve and heart here. Indeed, the influence of The Verve pushes itself to the fore in the swirling guitar melodies and hazy lyrics of songs such as ‘Drifting (Take A Walk Inside)’ and the gorgeous title-track. They are also no slouch at heartfelt balladry – in fact, the record could do with a few more such moments.
Overall, Build Me A Swan is a record that deserves to be lived with. Beautiful without sweeping you off your feet, it may turn out to be a real grower.
