Boy One dedicates 'Broken Skies' to Greta Thunberg
Boy One is the solo effort of The Blades bassist Brian Foley.
Boy One wants you to know he isn't jumping on the bandwagon with this one. 'Broken Skies' was written back in 1986, after Brian Foley read Frank McDonald's The Destruction of Dublin.
Nearly fifteen years later, it wasn't too difficult to tweak the lyrics to echo the Earth's destruction, rather than Dublin's. The instrumental on 'Broken Skies' is ironically sunny, while the lyrics are dark and looming. "What can we do, is it too late for your rescue? Say it isn’t true, we could save you if we wanted to. We can’t afford to lose, when tomorrow comes we’ll stand accused," he sings over driving rock guitar.
Foley is dedicating the song to Greta Thunberg, "and every other school child who is facing an uncertain future." He approached David Attenborough for some of his footage on climate change, but the BBC owns all the material, so with the help of filmmaker John Fisher, Foley compiled his own footage.
