Bob Marley-inspired novel claims Man Booker Prize
Marlon James' A Brief History of Seven Killings is announced winner of prestigious award
The 2015 Man Booker Prize has been awarded to Marlon James for his A Brief History of Seven Killings.
The novel - inspired by the attempted assassination of Bob Marley in the 1970s, and James (pictured above) pointed towards music as being a huge influence on his writing.
"The reggae singers Bob Marley and Peter Tosh were the first to recognise that the voice coming out our mouths was a legitimate voice for fiction and poetry," he said.
Michael Wood, chair of the judges, said the panel had reached a unanimous decision in less than two hours, describing it as most exciting book on the shortlist.
It beat out competition from five other shortlisted novels - including the highly-favoured A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara - to follow in the footsteps of last year's winner, Richard Flanagan's The Narrow Road to the Deep North.
