Beastie Boys announce documentary directed by Spike Jonze
The documentary will have a limited IMAX release on April 3 and will be available to stream globally via Apple TV+ on April 24.
The Beastie Boys are teaming up with world-renowned director Spike Jonze on a new documentary, out on the big and small screen. The Beastie Boys Story will have a limited IMAX release on April 3 and is set to stream globally via Apple TV+ on April 24.
Mike D and Ad-Rock recently released the Beastie Boys Book, a massive band memoir that included everything from photos to a cookbook. According to a statement given to Rolling Stone, the film, which seamlessly mixes documentary and live show footage to create a "live documentary" format, was inspired by the book and is meant to be a live extension of the print edition.
Jonze is no stranger to collaboration with the renowned hip hop group. A long-time friend of the group, he collaborated with them on music videos and is working on a photo book dedicated to them, out March 17.
Mike D and Ad-Rock said of Jonze: “There are some friends you have lunch with so many times over the years, you know their order. Spike is one of those friends. And even when you don’t recognize anything on the menu, he comes up with something good for the whole table. Like when we wondered what to do when our book comes out… then Spike placed his order: You will put on a show for the children.”
