Amy Huberman and John Carney on their latest ventures
Stars of Irish cinema fill us in on what they're up to
The Irish Film Board this morning brought together the great and the good of the industry in Ireland, including actress Amy Huberman, who is currently embarking on a new challenge.
She's likely to be found pen-in-hand these days, as she begins a new chapter of her career, this time as a writer.
"Screenwriting is a new venture for me," said Amy, "but it's terribly exciting."
It must be a tight fit in the schedule too, between her young family and her acting commitments, which most recently saw her star in Irish success The Stag.
"That was a brilliant experience," she said of the film, "and it was fantastic to see it go so well." She also praised the support for the industry in Ireland, commenting, "It’s great to see the support for young talent."
One man who's certainly doing his bit in terms of youth development is John Carney; his upcoming film Sing Street is currently mid-way through the editing process, and stars a cast largely made up of children.
"Having gone from working with big movie stars to working with six young Irish kids, it was the most refreshing experience of my life," he said.
The film also has a personal importance to the director. "It's a semi-autobiographical story about a kid starting a band. I did that – though, granted, not as successfully as he does!"
And, with a mischievous smile, John revealed that it even offers the chance to settle an old score or two.
"In cinema, you get to have revenge on all the teachers that hated you. I keep meeting teachers who say ‘God, it’s great to see you, I always backed you’. You think, ‘Sir, you threw me out of class and told me never come back!’”
