Album Review: The Coronas, True Love Waits
Indie-pop heroes kickstart new era on sixth album.
Following the unexpected departure of guitarist Dave McPhillips, The Coronas were forced to find a new approach. They even considered omitting guitar altogether. Instead, they sought out new inspirations and collaborators on the Irish music scene, blending fresh sounds to create an album teeming with hope.
The True Love Waits title-track opens the record on a high, showcasing their new outlook on life and music with the lyric, “Fuck that, take a chance.” ‘Find The Water’ boasts an entrancing neo-psych riff, as the group also experiment with real brass for the first time. Even in songs throbbing with uncertainty and self-doubt, like ‘Cold’, brightly layered guitars and synths inject a vibrant sense of optimism.
‘Lost In The Thick Of It’, a duet with Gabrielle Aplin, is dotted with twinkling guitars, making for another standout moment. Indeed, the band’s excitement about returning to the studio and pushing boundaries is palpable across these twelve passionate tracks. Full of love, hope and powerful crescendos, True Love Waits is an impressive addition to The Coronas’ increasingly vital legacy.
