Album Review: Lizzy McAlpine, Older
Indie pop darling strengthens her sonic muscles. 7/10
On her latest album, Older, Lizzy McAlpine shows a newfound confidence, both lyrically and musically. It’s a notable departure for the 24-year old indie singer, who wrote the album as she transitioned into adulthood.
After becoming a lockdown sensation on TikTok – where she recorded herself singing on the bathroom floor – in 2020, Lizzy released her debut album Give Me A Minute. With Older, she shows herself to be more than a social media flash in the pan, courtesy of its sky-scraping anthems.
The artistic growth is evident on many songs here, particularly ‘Broken Glass’, already a fan-favourite and setlist stand-out from her recent The End Of The Movie tour. Sometimes, all you need is a well-crafted, indie power-pop number to send cathartic shivers down your spine.
The lyrics are nifty too, with McAlpine singing, “It might seem like I love you / But I just don't want to be alone”. As such, ‘Broken Glass’ is a resounding declaration of agency, and an awakening to the truth. It’s a theme that underscores much of Older, and Lizzy McAlpine wants you to feel it under your skin.
