Album Review: From The Fire, Greta Van Fleet

Jimmy Page is sitting in his castle at this very moment, probably, adding eye of newt and toe of frog to a well-used cauldron, in an attempt to get Robert Plant to give up all this world music messing and go back on the road with Led Zep. It’s never going to happen, but we’ll always have heads like Greta Van Fleet striving to fill that German Airship-shaped gap. If The Fleet were any more Zep, they’d be back at the hotel, getting down with mud sharks (look it up). You have to take your (wizard’s) hat off to them for making absolutely no bones about it.

‘Safari Song’ rattles along on a Bonzo beat – get those air drums down from the attic – over which young Josh Kiszka channels his inner Percy, to inquire of a “Mama” what she’s “gonna do with all that love in your heart”. His brother Jake then comes in with a guitar solo that quotes, directly, from ‘Houses Of The Holy’ and ‘Black Dog’. It’s fantastic, but then again, it was fantastic the first time too.
Like that old Zep B-side, ‘Hey, Hey, What Can I Do’? Great, here it is again – only this time it’s called ‘Flower Power’ (really), and they even throw in the organ riff from ‘Your Time Is Gonna Come’, in case you’re still confused.

There’s a god-awful cover of ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’, and they veer a little too close to ’90s shitehawks Reef at times, but still, better to copy Zeppelin than the likes of Coldplay.
Completely ridiculous, but good sport all the same.
