Album Review: CC Brez- The Nightfall
Former Republic of Loose man brings "da funk"
Cormac Breslin, aka CC Brez, has stayed creative since departing from his former band, Republic of Loose. Initially, he teamed up with sister Orla for the excellent but short-lived Cars Love Girls, before deciding to go it alone. His self-released, debut solo album, ‘The Nightfall’, was recorded with various guest musicians throughout 2015 at Beech Park Studios, under the watchful eye of acclaimed producer Ger McDonnell. As an opening statement, ‘The Nightfall’ showcases the breadth of Breslin’s talents as songwriter, vocalist, guitarist and arranger.
Described by Brez as an ‘evening type of record’, The Nightfall has a smouldering blues and soul groove, reminiscent of ’80s Prince or even Sly Stone’s classic ‘There’s a Riot Goin’ On’. Nevertheless, the album retains a melodic pop sensibility. The smooth, gospel-tinged ‘Her Alibi’ is a standout. Complete with an addictively funky rhythm, it’s the sort of track that rattles around in your head long after the event.
‘The Lick’ showcases Brez’s accomplished range and fine guitar playing whilst ‘Scandalous’, with its spikey chorus and driving rhythm, wouldn’t feel out of place on a CeeLo Green record. Long live da funk.
