Billie Eilish, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre. oversee the Olympic handover from Paris to LA
The handover will see the City of Angels host the Games in 2028.
Los Angeles band Red Hot Chili Peppers, singer Billie Eilish and rappers Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre performed a mini-concert on Long Beach as part of yesterday's olympic ceremony handover from Paris to LA.
The dramatic pinnacle of the ceremony came about when Mission Impossible star Tom Cruise performed a major stunt in front of 71,5000 spectators at the Stade du France.
Around 9,000 athletes and 270 performers gathered as part of the closing ceremonies.
Cruise descended from the roof of the Paris Stadium and grabbed the Olympic flag from decorated American gymnast Simon Biles and LA Mayor Karen Bass.
This move was followed by a sequence of live motorbiking, prerecorded boarding of a plane and skydiving sequence.
Cruise skydived into LA before adorning the iconic Hollywood sign with the Olympic rings before segwaying into performances by Eilish, Snoop Dogg and the Chili Peppers.
Earlier in the closing ceremony, International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said the Paris Games had been “sport at its best”.
“These were sensational Olympic Games from start to finish,” Bach said. “Or dare I say: Seine-sational Games,” the IOC chief quipped in a reference to the capital city's river.
The ceremony followed 17 days of events and sporting action, which proved to be Team Ireland most successful Games ever.
Ireland finished 19th in the overall medal table, with a record tally of four golds and three bronze medals, including a historic win by Dublin sportswoman Kellie Harrington.
Irish medalists Cork rower Fintan McCarthy and Sligo swimmer Mona McSharry carried the Irish flag during the closing ceremony.
The Irish Olympians are due to be celebrated in a homecoming ceremony in Dublin city this afternoon.
