Olympic homecoming for Team Ireland to take place at GPO on Monday
DCC are asking attendees to plan ahead when the Olympic homecoming comes to O'Connell Street, which will have an impact on public transport services in City Centre.
The 2024 Paris Games have proven the most successful Olympiad for Team Ireland, collecting medals in swimming, boxing, rowing and gymnastics, with a few days to go until closing ceremony.
As such, Ireland's Olympians will be honoured at a public homecoming event in Dublin on Monday afternoon. Attendees will have a chance to celebrate the Olympic stars, such as Daniel Wiffen, Fintan McCarthy and Paul O'Donovan, Kellie Harrington, Rhys McClenaghan and more, in person. The event will be free and unticketed.
The civic reception, hosted by Dublin City Council, is set to take place at the GPO on O'Connell Street at 12.30pm.
Team Ireland have won seven medals so far, four gold and three bronze, making the Paris Games the most staggering in Irish Olympic history.
"We've all enjoyed watching the Irish athletes do us proud in Paris," Lord Mayor of Dublin James Geoghegan said. "Now is our chance to tell them in person just how proud we are of them. I have no doubt their efforts will have inspired lots of girls and boys all over the city and country to try and be like them some day."
"So come along to O’Connell St on Monday and let's give the Irish Team a welcome home to remember!"
Team Ireland Chef de Mission, Gavin Noble, spoke about the country's Olympic display, saying: "Over the past few weeks our athletes have performed outstandingly, and have inspired the nation with their endeavours at the Olympic Games in Paris.
"We are really proud of each and every one of them, and we would like to thank Dublin City Council for hosting such a special event to honour them."
DCC is asking people travelling to and from the family-friendly, alcohol-free event to enter O'Connell Street from the O'Connell bridge end. The event will have an impact on public transport, and DCC asks that attendees plan ahead.
Luas Green Line services will be suspended between Dominic and St Stephen's Green stops from 9.30am until 10pm. Similarly, Luas Red Line trams will not operate between Smithfield and The Point from 9.30am to 10pm.
Bus services will be diverted from O'Connell Street from 10am and will recommence on the northbound side of the street at 5pm and on the southbound side at 10pm.
In addition to the homecoming, the Samuel Beckett Bridge will feature a special message this Saturday and Sunday evening to celebrate Team Ireland's well-earned achievements.
