Dublin has a wealth of incredible young creatives taking the city by storm. The young creatives series showcases just a few of the people who continue to awe us with their talent and passion. Words by Roe McDermott and Aoife Bradshow.
After graduating with a degree in Film & Television Production from the National Film School in IADT, Kate Dolan’s graduate short film Breathe In was selected for a number of Irish and international film festivals during 2012, launching her on her way to a stream of successes.
Travelling to Germany, Kate took part in Berlinale Talents to develop her next short, Little Dolls, a heart-warming coming of age drama about a same-sex crush. Inspired by LGBT issues, she was included in the British Council’s Five Films 4 Freedom 2016 Global list for this portrayal. In 2016, she took part in the UK’s prestigious mentoring scheme for filmmakers, Guiding Lights, after which she received funding by Screen Ireland to make her first horror short film, Catcalls. Causing a stir at festivals both nationally and internationally, Catcalls follows a sexual predator who gets his just desserts when he decides to harass a pair of women.

Currently, she is taking part in Screen Ireland’s inaugural POV scheme for female filmmakers with a feature script she wrote entitled, You Are Not My Mother, which will be directed by Kate and produced by Deirdre Levins for Fantastic Films. This comes after Fantastic Films had success with their latest film Vivarium, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Imogen Poots, which screened at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.
