The Shows Must Go On: Citadel, Dead Ringers, The Diplomat, Will Trent

Citadel (Prime Video, April 28)

With Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Stanley Tucci and Lesley Manville on board, you just know that the Russo Brothers’ latest is going to be a winner – and so it proves to be with the spy thriller action unfolding at a furious pace.

Set in a future America that’s even more dystopian than the present one, the remnants of a global spy agency try to wrestle control of the country back from the shadowy Manticore syndicate. Also keep your eyes peeled for Caoilinn Springall, the impossibly talented eleven-year old who previously dazzled in The Midnight Sky.

Will Trent (Disney+, April 26)

The Stateside reviews for this eagerly-awaited Karin Slaughter adaptation have been mixed, but we love Ramón Rodríguez as the special agent with the highest clearance rate in the Georgia Bureau of Investigations. It’s not your usual macho police procedural, though, with the time Trent spent in Atlanta’s notoriously harsh foster ‘care’ system influencing his crime-fighting actions.

Dead Ringers (Amazon Prime, April 21)

Thirty-five years after thrilling cinema-goers goers, the David Cronenberg classic gets a televisual gender flip with Rachel Weisz playing twin gynaecologists Elliot and Beverly Mantle. If Jeremy Irons is a tough act to follow, no one’s told the English actress whose performance is just the right mix of menace and paranoid delusion. Incidentally, Cronenberg also has a new film, The Shrouds, that will be with us shortly.

The Diplomat (Netflix, April 21)

Not to be confused with the Barcelona-set Alibi series of the same name, this tense political thriller hones in on the US London Embassy where the new ambassador’s professional and private lives are both being compromised. Helmed by Deborah Cahn who previously struck TV gold with Homeland, it’s fiction based on fact and highly bingeable.
