Phibsboro For All to host A Girl from Mogadishu film screening
The screening will mark the final day of the 16 Days Of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence UN campaign.
Phibsboro For All is set to host a film screening of A Girl From Mogadishu at TUD Grangegorman on December 8 at 6:30 pm.
The screening comes as part of the community group's Film For All Screening series to mark the final day of the 16 Days Of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence UN campaign. The campaign supports women in the age of online violence, where women are subjected to harassment and abuse through location tracking, the sharing of harmful images/videos and AI deepfakes.
Following the screening, Irish-Somali activist Ifrah Ahmed will lead a discussion on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). FGM is a tradition practiced among several cultures and is often considered an initiation into womanhood, or as a way to "control" female sexuality prior to marriage.
The Girl From Mogadishu, originally released in 2019 and directed by Mary McGuckian, is inspired by the personal experiences of Ahmed, as she transformed her experience with FGM into an international campaign to end the practice.
The film explores her journey, fleeing from Somalia in 2006 and being trafficked to Ireland to seek asylum. She uses the trauma of her experience with FGM to incite action with the help of Irish politicians, even with push back from religious community leaders and her own family.
Admission to the screening is free, but you can reserve a spot here. Refreshments will also be provided.
