Paul Mescal and Olivia Rodrigo join forces for an unexpected surprise
The Irish actor surprised his co-star in Aftersun with a Happy Birthday message from pop-artist Olivia Rodrigo.
Normal People actor Paul Mescal was more than just a caring father figure on screen in drama Aftersun as the actor created a personal relationship with his onscreen daughter Frankie Corio. During the film’s production, Mescal surprised the actress with a video from Olivia Rodrigo on her Birthday.
Mescal told Corio, “I have a surprise for you.” in a recently shared video by Corio’s mother, Leona Corio.

It was a surprise indeed as Frankie Corio watched the video in shock, especially since she is a major fan of the pop icon.
“Hey Frankie, it’s Olivia,” said Rodrigo. Corio immediately gasped and was smiling during the entire video. Mescal could also not help to keep a smile off his face as he watched her reaction unfold.
“I heard that it’s your birthday so I wanted to come say hello. I hope you have the best day ever. I hope you eat lots of cake and open lots of presents and I hope I get to meet you real soon. Hope this one’s the best year yet, mwah,” exclaimed Rodrigo.
Rodrigo recently presented the Visionary Award to Lana Del Ray during this year’s Billboard Women in Music Awards. The artist is also expected to release new music soon after sharing to Instagram, “working on so many new songs I’m excited to show u!”
The surprise happened during production of Aftersun in Turkey as the film is set in a Turkish resort where Sophie, Corio’s character, spends a holiday with her father.
The onscreen father and daughter duo had their last award show together on Thursday, March 9th, with the Spirit Awards where the film took home Best First Feature. Mescal will continue onwards in L.A. with the Oscars.
Mescal will be competing for Best Actor for his role in Aftersun this Sunday, March 12, at the Oscars against other talented actors Austin Butler, Brendan Fraser, Bill Nighy and Colin Farrell. The 27-year-old actor is the youngest Best Actor nominee since Timothee Chalamet in 2018.
The film has been praised with other awards and recognition as well, with Charlotte Wells, the director of Aftersun, receiving the BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer. Mescal was also nominated at the BAFTAs for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, but lost to Austin Butler’s Elvis.
Mescal can be seen in other projects, such as Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire on London’s West End where he received an Olivier Award nomination for his portrayal of Stanley Kowalski. Mescal is also featured in upcoming films Carmen (Aidan) releasing in April, Foe (Junior) directed by Garth Davis and Strangers (Henry) directed by Andrew Haigh, both in post-production.
Tune into the Oscars this Sunday, March 12.
