First look image of The Walsh Sisters series two released

The first image from The Walsh Sisters season two has been released by RTÉ, in association with the BBC. The series is inspired by the novels of best-selling author Marian Keyes. Season two will adapt Keyes' book The Mystery of Mercy Close and Angels.

The series follows five sisters, along with their mother and father, navigating life in their Dublin hometown. The sisters are played by Caroline Menton (Rachel), Danielle Galligan (Claire), Stefanie Preissner (Maggie), Máiread Tyers (Helen), and Louisa Harland (Anna). Aidan Quinn plays Daddy Walsh and Carrie Crowley plays Mammy Walsh. Stefanie Preissner will also continue as creative lead and writer on the series.

A synopsis for the new season reads:

"Rachel (Caroline Menton) steps outside the family bubble to navigate recovery on her own terms, but an encounter with a familiar face tests her newfound independence; Claire (Danielle Galligan) defies the traditional expectations placed on her as a mother compared to her ex’s responsibilities as a father; Maggie’s (Stefanie Preissner) quest to become the perfect family takes an unexpected turn; Helen (Máiréad Tyers) becomes overprotective of her sisters while struggling with her emotional wellbeing; and Anna (Louisa Harland) tries some unusual methods to get over heartbreak.

"Meanwhile, Daddy Walsh (Aidan Quinn) remains blissfully oblivious to the family drama, focused entirely on his quest to land a part in the local amateur dramatic musical—much to the exasperation of Mammy Walsh (Carrie Crowley)."

The main cast are joined by several new characters in season two including Peter Coonan (Bad Sisters) as David, Rachel's fellow recovering addict; Aislín McGuckin (Normal People) as Patsy Costello, Luke's Mother; Art Campion (Blue Lights) as an old schoolfriend of the sisters; and Fay Ripley (Suspects) as marriage counsellor Sharon.

Louisa Harland, who plays Anna, won the IFTA Film and Drama Award for Rising Star for her role in the series.

A release date for the second season has yet to be announced.
