Enda Walsh is adapting Sing Street into a stage musical
Following the success of Once, Sing Street is now set to get its own musical adaptation.
2016's hit film Sing Street, which follows a young band in 1980s Dublin, is being adapted into a stage musical, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The musical, which is to premiere in the New York Theatre Workshop's 2019-20 season, will be adapted by Tony Award-winning Irish playwright Enda Walsh, with music and lyrics by the film's director John Carney and Gary Clark.
This isn't the first time that Walsh and Carney have teamed up to create a New York stage musical. Walsh previously adapted Carney's award-winning film Once for the stage in 2011, which went on to win eight Tony Awards.
Rebecca Taichman is set to direct the production, with choreography by Sonya Taye.
Sing Street, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, featured a heavyweight Irish cast, including Aidan Gillen, Maria Doyle Kennedy and Jack Reynor. The film's younger actors, including Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Mark McKenna and Percy Chamburuka (aka rapper Jafaris) have also seen major success since the release.
Take a look at our interviews with director John Carney, and the young stars of Sing Street, originally published in 2016.
