Emmys recap: Billy Porter, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Game of Thrones win big
Stars come together in Los Angeles to celebrate the biggest night in television. Here's who won this year.
Last night was the 71st Emmys ceremony. In case you missed it, let us catch you up to speed on the big winners of the night.
Firstly, Billy Porter took home the award for Best Lead Actor for his role on Pose. It was certainly one of the most fulfilling wins of the night as he received a heartfelt standing ovation from his colleagues. Porter, who was celebrating his 50th birthday, is the first openly gay black man to win the illustrious award.
Next up, there’s the dark horse of the night: Phoebe Waller-Bridge. She wasn’t on many viewers' radar prior to the ceremony but emerged victorious for her wonderful contributions to Fleabag. The creator-actor’s show took home the award for Outstanding Comedy, defying many publications predictions. She also won an individual for Lead Actress in a Comedy.
Then, of course, Game of Thrones has to go out with a bang winning Outstanding Drama, the nights most prestigious award. The show concluded this year with it’s polarizing last season but still took home the win and a solidified legacy. Though the show itself won, the only one of its stars to take home an individual prize was Peter Dinklage, who played the dwarf Tyrion Lannister.
Continuing his winning streak this year with his 6th Emmy was Rupaul for Drag Race, which won Best Reality-Competition. The celebratory sentiment of the win was thrown a bit off when a reporter challenged Rupaul on ‘lack of diversity,’ to which he responded, ‘First of all, the host of our show is black, gay and a drag queen, so check, check and check.’
Finally, Jodie Comer took home the win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama for Killing Eve.
Ultimately, the 71st Emmy’s made for a historic night.
